For the week of: Wednesday
18th October 2006
WHAT?S BEEN HAPPENING?:
Its all go in the tomato plant department, most gardeners aim for labour weekend
to have the vege gardens planted. Tender plants such as Corgettes, Pumpkin,
Cucumbers usually better planted now. Main crop potatoes plant now,Red king,
Red Rascals for red varieties and some of the most popular whites are Nadine
and Maris anchor. Don't forget to side dress with diacks potato fertilizer for
the best results. Yams can go in now too, they grow all season and mature at
the first frosts. Plenty of good Annuals around now for planting out beds, pots
or baskets. Potted colour at the moment are Geraniums, Fushsias and Pelargoniums
all look great. We have a good selection of grasses at the moment and some in
six packs, which makes good buying for big ares. Shrubs are flowering too. Viburnums,
Rhododendrons and the last of the flowering cherries. Kanzan is the big
double pink. Magnolas still carrying a few flowers and Camellias nearly finished,
but still a good time to be out looking around for flowering shrubs.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BE DOING?:
Keeping ahead of the weeds, they seem to be most prolific at this time of year.
Planting main crop Potatoes and Tomatoes. Fertilize Rhodo's and Camellias to
help the new growth, watch out for bugs on Roses. A garden is like looking after
children. Constant attention everyday at this time of year, and don't forget
to enjoy it, it's not always a chore, even though it's a bit like housework,
you work around each corner most weeks. Good gardening!
