For the week of: Wednesday. 18th January 2006

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?:

Changeable weather this week. We've had some more rain to keep things fresh, and sunshine and a little heat again to remind us that it is still summer.

Main sales this week have been vege plants - they transplant well with a bit of moisture. Still good supplies of young seedlings - cabbages, cauliflower, brocolli, silverbeet, leeks etc.

The hail at the weekend produced coleslaw cabbages in the garden. Although this is a novel way to make coleslaw it may pay to plant a few more to fill the gaps.

Flower gardens need a scratch over to brake the crust that all this rain has made.

We have stock plants ready now to flower over the winter and early spring. Stock is good for planting in the dry spots of the garden. We still have a few petunias that will flower soon, if you want a bit of colour over the next month or two.

Seed potatoes can be harvested now and replaced with a green crop (either lupins or mustard make a great green crop) or maybe empty the compost bin there with some peastraw.

Best flowering plants at the moment are Gazanias, Dianthus and bright blue Agapanthus. Agapanthus make a terrific display when planted under trees. We have them in store, in flower for $4.95ea, or 5 for $20.00.

Lawns are still growing, especially if you have fertilized them. Look out for star weed and dig some out every weekend to keep your lawn full and green.

White butterfly is about at the moment, to combat that use a bit of derris dust. There's also greenfly and whitefly around as well, this is more difficult to control as it multiplies every four days - try using a bit of confidor or target to stop them multiplying and get some control back.

WHATS SHOULD YOU BE DOING?:

General tidy up after the wind and rain. Make sure all trees are well staked as there's been a lot lost in the wind. Keep picking those tomatoes - they're coming ready quickly now with some heat.

Have a good weekend and don't work too hard. (If you live in Invercargill, check out the vintage car rally!!!)
