Herb of the Week for 5th of October
Colourful Calendulas by Lynn Kirkland
Calendulas are a herb that many gardeners
refer to as marigolds.
There are many varieties of marigolds
but the ones to look for to have the healing
ones in your garden are Calendula Officinalis.
These are the old fashioned variety that
has all the healing in them.
They are an annual herb, growing from
moon shaped seeds and come in bright orange
or yellow colours, both of which contain
wonderful properties in their flower petals.
We make oil and tincture extracts to use
in our products.
It is such an amazing healer and skin
softener.
It will happily self sow around the garden
and often you will find that it grows
better in a self chosen area. It is not
really fussy about growing conditions
apart from being a sun worshipper and
the sun is necessary to develop the resinous
constituents in the petals.
The petals are edible so can be sprinkled
on salads or in soups.
Tea can be made from the flowers to soothe
irritated digestive tracts.
Sore eyes can be bathed in a cooled tea
to ease the irritation.
Calendula has many other excellent virtues
such as antifungal and antibacterial which
is why calendula healing creams are so
popular as a first aid cream.
Thanks lynn another great
read.
