Herb of the Week for 28th of September
Hail St Francis by Lynn Kirkland
The 4th of October is the celebration
day of the life of St Francis.
Commonly known as the patron Saint of
animals he is also the patron Saint of
Italy and ecology.
Nowadays we talk about the size of our
carbon footprint and how we can be environmentally
careful in our lives and workplaces when
really concern for the environment has
been going on for generations.
St Francis did his bit in the small Italian
town of Assisi and preached about the
need to appreciate nature and to take
care of God’s animals. People brought
their animals to him for healing and this
is why many churches celebrate his life
around this time and many open their doors
and welcome in the family pets for blessings.
There is the most beautiful story called
“The Small Miracle” by Paul Gallico which
I highly recommend you find and read.
It is the story of a small orphan boy
living in Assisi. It tells of his love
for his donkey Violetta. His livelihood
depends on this donkey and when Violetta
falls ill he seeks help and the story
develops in the most touching way as he
tries to take Violetta into the church
where the bones of St Francis lie.
It is a very moving story and a posy of
daffodils, jonquils, snowdrops, violets,
carnations, lily of the valley, pansies
and sweetheart roses feature in this tale.
As for how it turns out you will need
to get a copy and see for yourself.
Thanks lynn another great
read.
